BUILDERS’ GUIDES

Builders’ merchant services: what to ask before you go

Services vary between branches, including branches of the same merchant. Start with the job you need done, then ask the branch about the specification, charge and lead time.

Find local merchants

Cutting and machining

Timber cutting, sheet cutting and timber machining are different services. Confirm which materials the branch can work with, the finished dimensions and tolerance you need, any cutting-list format, minimum order and collection time. For sheets, identify the required face or grain direction and agree who allows for the saw cut. Ask about the return terms before commissioning cut or machined material.

Brick matching and paint mixing

For brick matching, ask whether the branch wants a sample, measurements or photographs. Discuss colour, size, texture and availability before selecting a replacement. For mixed paint, confirm the colour reference, product and finish; ask about batch consistency and the returns policy before ordering.

Delivery and crane offload

Ask about delivery area, charges, vehicle size, access and where goods can be placed. A delivery service does not automatically include crane offload or a guaranteed time slot. Agree the unloading arrangements with the supplier before dispatch.

HSE guidance says unloading areas should be clear of other traffic, pedestrians and overhead electric cables, with firm, level ground for vehicle stability. Discuss site restrictions and safe access with the supplier; do not assume the driver can lift over an obstruction. See HSE’s loading and unloading guidance.

Tool hire, plant hire and estimating

For hire, explain the task and ask the hire company about suitable equipment, operator competence, identification, deposits, delivery, collection and damage-cover terms. For take-off or estimating, confirm the drawings required, scope, exclusions, turnaround and whether the service includes a quotation. Review the resulting list against the job specification before ordering.

Collection and branch facilities

Check click-and-collect arrangements before travelling. Parking, toilets, showroom space, yard collection and loading facilities vary by branch. Confirm any access requirements directly with the branch.

Using TPC’s filters

Enter a postcode near where you’re working. The app offers merchant-type, service and weekend-opening filters. Service and weekend-opening filters use the branch information available. Confirm details with the branch before travelling. These filters therefore cover fewer branches than the unfiltered directory. A missing result does not mean a branch cannot help. Clear the filters and contact the branch to check.

Matching results remain in distance order. Bank holiday and exceptional hours should be checked with the branch.
