BUILDERS’ GUIDES

Opening a trade account at a builders’ merchant

A trade account can organise your purchases and the prices you agree with a merchant. Start by asking which account types the branch offers and which is suitable for the way your business buys materials.

Trade cash and trade credit

A cash account is generally pay-as-you-go. A credit account allows purchases up to an agreed limit with payment due under the merchant’s terms, subject to approval. Account names, eligibility and terms vary: do not assume another merchant uses the same arrangements.

For an example of the distinction, Travis Perkins describes its cash and credit accounts. That merchant’s benefits and terms are not a promise about other branches or TPC.

Prepare your application

Check the merchant’s application requirements. Have your business name, trading address and contact details ready, and provide company or VAT registration information where applicable. A credit application may require additional financial information and checks. Ask the merchant what is required and use its secure application route.

Questions before your first order

  • Price: ask for your price for the exact product, quantity and unit. Confirm whether VAT and delivery are included.
  • Payment: agree the due date and how it is calculated, the credit limit, and any charges for late payment. Read any guarantee or other personal commitment before accepting it; get independent advice if you are unsure.
  • Authority: agree who may order on the account and which purchase-order or job references are needed.
  • Delivery: confirm access, offload arrangements, charges and the delivery window. See our merchant services guide.
  • Returns: ask about return deadlines, charges and exclusions for cut, mixed or special-order goods before ordering.
  • Records: keep order confirmations, invoices, credit notes and delivery records together and query discrepancies promptly.
